Myatt Garden Primary School

Design & Technology

Design and technology at Myatt Garden is all about creative problem solving, so is a fabulous vehicle for developing learning skills such as perseverance, resilience and team work.

Children have the opportunity to work independently or as part of a team on different projects, enabling them to develop interpersonal skills, as well as verbal and written communication skills.

Our DT curriculum is structured to allow children to develop their creativity, imagination and practical skills as they design and make a wide range of products. Units have been carefully planned to allow children to progress their skills as they move through the school. For example, children learn to hand sew using running stitch in Year 2; by Year 4 they are recycling garments to make hand sewn bags including appliqued decorations; and by Year 6 they are using sewing machines to make Tudor doorstops.

Children develop the technical and practical expertise for everyday life such as: hand and machine sewing; basic hygiene skills for food handling; basic cooking skills; use of hand tools such as saws, glue guns and vices; and evaluating the suitability of products for their purpose.

At Myatt we teach design and technology in a creative environment. Our children think, plan and create - and are enthusiastic about communicating their ideas. Many of our DT units are blocked, allowing children to spend sustained periods of time working on a significant project.
